European soccer teams, leagues, and competitions are something I have zero knowledge about, but it was easy to see that yesterday was a BIG soccer day in Istanbul! Galatasaray, one of the top four teams in the Turkish football Süper Lig, played Antalyaspor Kulübü, an Anyalya-based club also in the top four. The atmopshere was fun and exciting!
Crucial Match
The Saturday game was a super big deal and a “crucial match for the championship“. With two matches remaining, Galatasaray was 4 points ahead of their closest rival, Fenerbahçe, also based in Istanbul.
Yesterday, Galatasaray secured the championship by winning the match against Antalyaspor 4-2! The teams were tied 2-2 for a while, but Galatasaray played brilliantly and rallied, gaining 2 more points to win!

I knew something was in the air, when raucous crowds gathered near Taksim Square a week ago wearing team t-shirts and colors. I’ve also spotted several players (their athletic physiques clearly stand out) walking along Istiklal Street.
The weather was in the 70s and wonderful. I spent most of the day walking around the busy streets and lazing in outdoor cafés. In the afternoon, police gathered around Taksim Square with their massive paddy wagons. A little hesitant to venture out into the rowdy crowds, I watched most of the game on my laptop. The commentary was in Turkish, but both teams were strong and amazing – almost like watching a video game – endless talent and energy!
