St. Peter’s Basilica Dome – Walks Inside Rome

Touring St. Peter’s Basilica, a “renowned temple of Christianity,” was a mesmerizing experience! It’s where the Pope presides over important liturgical events, including Christmas and Easter Masses. The basilica is not only “one of the most sacred Christian sites, but also a major pilgrimage destination and the largest church in the world”. Approaching St. Peter’s Square – tucked away behind Roman arches, walls, and cobblestoned sidestreets – the magnificent church suddenly loomed large on the horizon in front of me!

“The dome of Saint Peter’s Basilica was conceived and built up to the drum by Michelangelo Buonarroti. From 1588 to 1590, after the death of the Master, it was brought to completion by Renaissance architects Giacomo della Porta and Domenico Fontana. They raised the dome in 22 months, thanks to the tireless efforts of over 800 labourers.” basilicasanpietro.va

St. Peter’s Square Christmas Tree and Obelisk

St. Peter’s Square still displays some 2025 Christmas decorations, including a giant Christmas tree set next to the towering Vatican Obelisk. In 37 AD, Roman Emperor Caligula brought the ancient Egyptian figure to Rome. The massive 4,000-year-old red granite monolith has a fascinating history of its own.

I remember visiting the basilica during a previous trip and approaching it via a central Rome vantage point. From my apartment in Vatican City, it’s a 10-minute walk.

History

Basilica construction began in 1506, after the structurally damaged original was demolished. Several renowned architects designed the temple, highlighting the works of Bramante, Michelangelo, and Carlo Maderno. The dome design was started by Michelangelo and continued by Giacomo Della Porta. Every detail in St. Peter’s Square, on the Basilica façade, and inside its sacred walls has a special meaning. I didn’t visit the underground crypt containing tombs of the Popes.

Climbing to St. Peter’s Dome

My tour was basically self-led and began with a fun climb to the dome. A guide met us at the entrance and escorted us to the 500+ step circular stairway leading from the ground to the dome. To say we marveled at mind-blowing views from the top is an understatement! The climb took about 10 minutes. The descent to the basilica interior below was trickier, with some slippery areas along the stairway.

Words can’t describe accurately the magnificent panoramas of Rome from the top! They were breathtaking!! Large crowds inside the basilica and a steep trajectory made photography difficult. I’ve attached some excellent media shots along with a few of my own photos.

Inside St. Peter’s Basilica

The massive basilica interior contains impressive pieces of art, including St. Peter’s Baldachin, a large bronze baldachin designed by Bernini, The Pietà sculpture by Michelangelo, and a Statue of St. Peter on his throne “with his right foot worn down due to touches of the devoted”.
