Entopia is a magic place! Inside the roofed sanctuary, thousands of butterflies fly free among waterfalls, ponds, caves, and tropical vegetation. It’s one of the largest butterfly farms in Malaysia – over 15,000 butterflies and 200+ species of plants.
Invertebrate and insect exhibits are also interesting, not to mention a fantastic museum with edu-stations. It was a wonderful, relaxing experience, and I learned more than ever imagined about butterflies. Attracted to my sun hat, several butterflies joined me while sitting at an outdoor café enjoying a cold drink.

Natureland and Cocoon
The butterfly farm is organized in two separate sections – Natureland and Cocoon.
Natureland
Natureland is the outdoor section, where visitors observe butterflies and other creatures in their natural habitats. Natureland covers 8,000 square meters with the four main zones described below.

Butterfly Sanctuary – butterflies fly free, and their life cycle is explained in a Metamorphosis Lab and Breeding Room

Bug Exploration Zone – up close inspection of bugs, including beetles, scorpions, spiders, and centipedes, and their function in the ecosystem.

Learning Lab – interactive exhibits, experiments, videos, and documentaries teach visitors about insect anatomy, physiology, and ecology
Thai Water Garden – ponds, streams, waterfalls, fish, water plants and flowers, turtles, and a peaceful meditation area

Cocoon
The Cocoon is the indoor section at Entopia, where visitors “explore and experience the wonders of nature and art” in a 6,000 square meter museum. The four museum zones – Pandora Forest, Understory Tales, Reptile Encounter, and Artisan Workshop – are summarized below..

Pandora Forest – see and touch “glowing plants and animals that emit light and color” and listen to nature’s soothing sounds

Understory Tales – secrets and stories of the forest floor underground, including “fungi, worms, ants, and termites that live and work in the soil”

Reptile Encounter – snakes, lizards, and crocodiles living in the rainforest

Artisan Workshop – learn to “make and decorate souvenirs and gifts using natural materials and techniques,” and browse products and artworks of local artists

History
“Entopia began its journey with David Goh, a young teacher with interest and passion for butterflies. Simply inspired, he set out to establish a tropical butterfly farm as a Penang tourist destination. In 1986, this self-taught entomologist founded Penang Butterfly Farm – the world’s first tropical butterfly and insect sanctuary.”

“Over the years, 5+ million visitors have toured Penang Butterfly Farm. It’s become the pride and joy of Penang. During its prime, it garnered many awards. TripAdvisor voted it as one of the best destinations in Penang.”

I’ve enjoyed exploring Malaysia and learned many things. There isn’t enough time to post about everything, so many memories will remain in my heart and head. I leave for Cape Town South Africa on Wednesday. It’s winter there, and temperatures will be cooler than Penang. A favorite place, I haven’t visited South Africa since 2019, and miss its incredible beaches, mountains, and exquisite natural landscapes.
