Cable Bay Hike Nelson New Zealand

Cable Bay is one of the most beautiful bays I’ve ever seen! It’s located outside of Nelson on a rugged coastline and surrounded by farmland with horses, cattle, sheep, and goats. I wanted to hike for about 6 hours and the trail from Cable Bay toward The Glen was perfect. Lost the hiking trail an hour or so into the hike and ended up hugging the fence line along the coast which was very steep but the views were fabulous! The water in the bay was so blue and I could see many lovely little beaches along the coast below as well as snow-capped mountains in the distance – spectacular vistas and all were crystal clear.

Part of the joy of the hike was the abundant animals along the way. The cows were absolutely gorgeous – red and white and black and white – and all were in heaven feeding on the fresh tender grass. They did not respond to my mooooooos and reacted to “Yo Cows” with dirty looks (sure to please Gary Larsen) followed by a cow pie… The goats were a little friendlier. There were many adorable calves and kids in the herds and lots of small very-pretty orangish butterflies – not sure but maybe it’s butterfly season.

Finished the simple but satisfying hike refreshed with a euphoric feeling – the scenery was pure New Zealand magic. Tomorrow morning it’s off to Abel Tasman National Park.
