Amapiano Dance Championship Artscape Theatre Cape Town

The Amapiano Dance Championship 2024 celebrates South Africa’s vibrant dance culture. The competition offers talented dancers the “opportunity to perform on prestigious stages, blending Amapiano’s street-originated dance style with the professionalism of a theater performance.”

Solos, Duos, Trios, Groups

Competition platforms include solos, duos, trios, and groups. The semi-finals kickoff was this weekend at Artscape Theatre. After Cape Town, the competition continues at iconic performing arts theaters in Durban, Johannesburg, Bloemfontein, and Gqeberha.

Empowering Young Dancers

The goal of the Amapiano Dance Championship is “empowering young, emerging dancers, particularly those from disadvantaged communities”. The chance to exhibit their skills on “professional platforms” is a “life-changing opportunity”. The dancers also benefit from professional theatre-craft workshops on choreography, lighting and sound design, and costume creation.

The dancers are judged by a panel of industry experts.

Captivating Dance Moves

I had no idea what to expect at the matinee performance, but was engrossed in the dance moves and impressed by the talent and energy of the beautiful dancers!

Best Group Tie

There was a tie for best group, so the sponsor – Elvis Sibeko – asked the dancers to give a short performance exhibiting their best moves. Then, he asked the audience to choose a winner. The audience applauded equally for both, so both groups are going to the next competition.

_____________

“With a sound best described as a hybrid of deep house and jazz with percussive loops reminiscent of lounge music coupled with soulful vocals, Amapiano is arguably South Africa’s hottest new export.” South Africa

____________

The matinee audience was small but enthusiastic. There were no programs, so I don’t have names of dancers and groups. Photos aren’t captioned. I thoroughly enjoyed the performance by these extremely talented young dancers!
