Constantia Hills and World of Birds Western Cape South Africa

After a few days of foggy, dreary coastal weather, I woke up to full-blown sunshine and decided to go wandering. While exploring the Constantia hills, I stumbled upon a hidden treasure, World of Birds. It’s the “largest bird park in Africa, with over 3,000 birds and small animals in landscaped walk-through aviaries“!

“Many birds are rescued, including clever parrots saved from horrible owners, orphaned owls that couldn’t fend for themselves in the wild, and pigeons and ibis that were found injured in people’s gardens.” Cape Town Magazine

The aviaries are “framed by spectacular scenery like the Twelve Apostles, Table Mountain, Chapman’s Peak, Constantiaberg, and Little Lion’s Head“. Parrots were chatty, and the monkey jungle was a riot – wish I’d been able to capture a photo of one of them sitting on top of my head. It was uncrowded, so there was plenty of time to mingle peacefully with the birds and animals in their beautifully-crafted homes. Photos on the World of Birds website are spectacular!

I climbed out of the hills and took the lesser-traveled Chapman’s Peak route home, stopping for an early dinner in Noordhoek. The mellow day was another reminder of why I so love the Western Cape and its incredible, unmatched beauty – big sigh!
