There’s nothing better than a South African beach with its surrounding mountains! I spent time at Onrus Beach yesterday and fell in love with the sky, surf, dogs, shorebirds, surfers, and children playing in the sand – totally mesmerizing! Binoculars are helpful for whale watching, but whales often come close to the coast giving their admirers a thrill!
The area is known as the Cape Whale Coast. It’s pristine white sand beaches and easy-going atmosphere are popular with an eclectic crowd of beach bums, locals, retirees, and tourists from all corners of the earth.
I enjoyed lunch at Milkwood Bistro – a cozy neighborhood restaurant on the water. The service was great, food delicious, and ocean view hypnotic.

The main towns of the area are Kleinmond, Hermanus, Stanford, and Gansbaai. Looks fabulous! The whales should be passing our place now, but as it happens we have had to come to Adelaide’s Barossa Valley on some family business, so aren’t there to see them.
It’s bone-chilling cold here by the sea and very few SA.houses have proper heating. Not sure I can last through August… Only a small portable heater!!
Ditto where we are in Tanunda in the Barossa Valley of Sth Aust. And just hung up from a friend who said she only lasted one winter in a house they bought in the Adelaide Hills. This time next week we’ll be back on the temperate east coast and hopefully I will find that warmer.
