Friendship with Cambodia and the Cambodian/American rock band Dengue Fever have joined to help stop human trafficking in Cambodia.
Dengue Fever is an innovative LA band that combines Cambodian pop with rock. “The band’s exotic blend of Cambodian rock, Afro grooves, surf and garage psych, consists of Cambodian songstress Chhom Nimol, Zac Holtzman (guitar/vocals), Ethan Holtzman (keyboards), Senon Williams (bass), Paul Smith (drums), and David Ralicke (horns). The band recently returned from a tour of Southeast Asia made possible via an Arts Grant by the U.S. State Department and the U.S. Embassies in Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam. It was their third tour of the region and included club dates, massive outdoor festivals, charity performances, and workshops.”
On Monday, February 6, Dengue Fever joins Secret Chiefs 3 in concert at historic WOW Hall, a community center for the performing arts in Eugene, Oregon. The concert is a fundraising event for Friendship with Cambodia, a humanitarian aid organization based in Eugene. Friendship with Cambodia will sell fair-trade Cambodian gifts, including scarves and handbags, with 100% of the proceeds going toward supporting programs to help young women in Cambodia who are at risk for trafficking.
“Friendship with Cambodia and Dengue Fever are bringing attention to the problem of sex-trafficking in Cambodia, where one out of every ten girls is sold to a brothel. The danger is especially high for girls in rural villages. Traffickers tell parents that their daughters can work in a garment factory and the trafficker gives the parents the first month’s wages. The girls are then taken and sold to brothels where they are raped, beaten, and forced to work off their debt.
Friendship With Cambodia has awareness campaigns in rural villages that tell families of the danger of traffickers. Its fair-trade crafts program purchases items from organizations that work to rescue young women and give them alternative employment. Education for Cambodian girls is another way to curb human trafficking. Students are not at risk for being trafficked. Friendship with Cambodia sponsors young women through high school and university. Currently, only 6% of the students in Cambodia finish high school.”
