Shivkumar SharmaThis Saturday local jazz saxophonist, composer, and arranger Buddy Wells and Indian classical musicians Shivkumar Sharma, Rahul Sharma, and Subhankar Banerjee collaborate at a Celebration of Santoor concert in Cape Town. Shivkumar and Rahul are experts on the santoor – an ancient 100-stringed hammered dulcimer originating in the valley of Kashmir in the Himalayas – and Subhankar is a renowned tabla player.

Over the past 50 years Shivkumar Sharma introduced the dulcimer to millions of new listeners. His album, Call of the Valley, is the best-selling classical music album in India.

Rahul Sharma collaborates with many famous performers including Peter Gabriel. Rahul recorded Rhythm of Love, one of his 50 albums, performed live in San Francisco accompanied by tabla player, percussionist Zakir Hussain. Rahul collaborated with Kenny G. on his most recent album, Namaste India, which is topping the international charts. This Saturday Subhankar Banerjee accompanies Rahul on the tabla, a percussion instrument used in classical, popular, and devotional Indian music.
